Correct laden

5 tips for correctly loading your trailer

Are you going to transport a big load soon? Then a trailer is indispensable. We are happy to explain how best to load a trailer. So you can transport your load without any worries.

1. Payload

Before you start loading your trailer, it is important to know how heavy you can load it.

What should you pay attention to?

  1. The weight your vehicle is allowed to tow
  2. The load capacity of the trailer

Start from the lightest weight. Because if your trailer can handle 3000 kg, for example, your car may not be suitable for that.

2. Tips for a safely distributed load

The most important thing is a good distribution of your load. Of course, you don't want your load to slide or sway.

Dé perfecte manier om je aanhanger te laden bestaat niet. Alles hangt af van je lading en je  aanhanger.

Starting with the biggest and heaviest stuff, put it above the axle(s).Loading the big loads at the very end
Centre your load.A heavy object on the right rear in an empty trailer.
Load the left and right sides equally.Load everything on 1 side, that way you can lose control of your trailer.
Start at the front as much as possible. That way, your load won't slip when you brake.

3. How do I correctly secure my load?

Besides proper distribution, it is also important that your load is properly secured. It is best to centre your load to secure it as well as possible with lashing straps. Do this from front to back, as well as from left to right.

Then you can seal the whole thing with a trailer net or tarpaulin. Definitely a good idea when the load should not get wet.

Note! This is mandatory in Belgium for loose loads.

4. What about outstanding loads?

It may well be that your trailer is just a little too short, in which case your load is allowed to stick out 1 metre. Of course, make sure your load is properly secured.

If the load protrudes more than 1m, you are obliged to hang a marking from it.

5. Bearing pressure

The drawbar load is the load on your towbar. In extreme cases, you can see this because the rear of the car sags and the suspension cannot handle the weight.

Where can I find the maximum nose weight of my car?

You can find the maximum drawbar load in several places:

  1. In your car's papers under 'maximum vertical load'
  2. On the iron plate next to the tow bar plug socket under 'vertical load'
  3. On the internet when you search for 'drawbar load' or 'vertical load' followed by the type and year of your car.
